26 August 2026

26 August is the day to wish “happy birthday” to my great niece Harlow, my sister-in-law’s daughter Sophie, my ex-neighbour Julie, my friends’ daughter Cami and also, our beautiful dog Levi who is now in heaven.

Today is also the day that we learned of Dolly Parton’s death, plus I had news of the passing of a friend’s father. My friend’s grief, so fresh, brought back memories of what I felt 12 years ago losing my own dad. He was my hero and his death was a massive blow after mum dying just five weeks prior. I was reminded of the importance to openly mourn and not be ashamed of the depth of feelings that take over mind and body. (Jordan Dawson of the Adelaide Crows is recent proof of this.)

So while today was filled with work as usual, further preparations for this weekend’s art exhibition, plus singing in the band, ultimately it’s been about birthdays and news of deaths. Life from beginning through end.

As they say, it’s the bit in between that’s most important. Each day is precious.

Rest in peace Dolly, Roger and Levi. And happy birthday to all those born 26 August.
